This was the amazing moment yesterday when a new island was formed during a volcanic eruption in Japan’s Ogasawara chain, part of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’. It’s appearance couldn’t be more timely, as this week we celebrate the 26th annual Geography Awareness Week.
Whilst the Galapagos Islands are not within the Ring of Fire, they have been formed from volcanic activity, and all of the islands in the Archipelago will at one time have looked like the photo above. An amazing thought when you consider the diversity of life that lives on the Islands today.
