Introduction

Learning objectives

  • To understand how human processes interact to influence and change landscapes, environments and the climate.
  • To investigate the history and growth of tourism in Galapagos.
  • To consider the positive and negative effects of tourism.
  • To understand why the Galapagos National Park has a set of rules for tourists and visitors to the Islands.
  • To know how different people in the Galapagos have different roles within tourism.
  • To be able to assume a role and argue for that position.
  • To understand how collaboration between stakeholders is key to sustainability.

Students’ outcomes

  • To recognise why the Galapagos Islands National Park has a set of rules.
  • To have a sound understanding of the costs and benefits of capping tourist numbers in the Galapagos Islands.
  • To be able to see tourism as an activity with far-reaching consequences.
  • To explain the role of different stakeholders in the tourism industry and, more specifically, Galapagos.
  • To explain and justify their reasons for prioritising stakeholders.

Galapagos National Park entry fees set to increase from August 2024

The Galapagos National Park Directorate, Governing Council and Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism announced the increase, the first since 1998, to raise more funds for conservation and the local community.
