About Galapagos giant tortoises
The Galapagos giant tortoise is synonymous with the Islands. In fact, the very word Galapagos derives from an old Spanish word for tortoises. This eventually came to be how the islands were known. Sadly, through overhunting, humans drove Galapagos giant tortoises to extinction on some islands and the brink of extinction on others. Today, of the 14 species that once lived throughout the Islands, only 12 remain. The remaining species range from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered on the IUCN’s Red List of Endangered Species.
How an adoption helps
Whilst their population is stabilising, the threat of invasive species, habitat destruction and urban expansion remains. By adopting a Galapagos giant tortoise today, you can help to protect these species, their habitats and other Galapagos wildlife. Your adoption could help support the Galapagos Giant Tortoise Movement Ecology Programme, which looks to understand their ecology and migration patterns.
Our digital adoption pack includes a downloadable fact file full of information about these iconic species, as well as two digital certificates – one that can be personalised at home and one that can be sent on or printed as is. The recipient will also receive updates through our monthly e-Newsletter about the conservation work we are doing in Galapagos. If you wish to find further information about Galapagos giant tortoises, you can do so on our species page here.
Please note, digital adoptions are downloadable via email once purchased.
